I visited Manila in Nov-Dec 2008 for 28 days with the trip organised through Dental Express. During this time I had three root canals, a bridge and approximately a dozen fillings. I found Dr Edz, Dr Marzo and Dr Cha to be excellent dentists with the service far superior (and cheaper) to anything I have experienced in Australia.
A little bit of information for anyone who may be considering heading over…
At the international airport, you can get metered taxis. A trip from the airport to Makati cost just over 200 pesos (about $7) I stayed at the Great Eastern Hotel. This is in the cheaper downtown area of Makati and cost 1500 pesos per night (about $45 per night). The hotel is showing its age a bit now but I liked it. The best thing about staying in Makati is that you can walk to the dentist; from the Great Eastern Hotel it was about half an hour’s leisurely walk. The cheaper Makati hotels are near a bit of a red light district, which is interesting to visit but may not be everyone’s cup of tea. You’ll get some beggars, people trying to flog you stuff you don’t need and others trying to rip you off, but as long as you’re alert and firm there will be no problems.
The first day, Dr Edz did a clean and polish, checked for cavities and took a panoramic x-ray. She commenced with the restorations (fillings) the day after; Dr Marzo also commenced with the first root canal the day after. The staff were friendly, compassionate, professional and careful at all times. There was an existing infection in one tooth which required antibiotics so I had to wait a bit longer than I expected, but it was good to finally have the bridge installed.
For anyone interested in sightseeing, Greenbelt and Glorietta in Makati are great for shopping/dining out/nightlife. The Avilon Zoo in Montalban is excellent (I would actually rate it as better than Taronga) although it takes a little bit of getting to. There is also the Taal Volcano for anyone who wants to do a daytrip – a boat ride across a lake, followed by a dusty hike (or horse ride) up to the crater. I wasn’t a huge fan of Lake Taal and the volcano myself, but others might be.
I also flew down to the island of Bohol on Cebu Pacific, which was lovely – beaches, the Chocolate Hills and cute little tarsiers. Didn’t get as much as time sightseeing as I would have liked, but I am already planning to head back next year.
Based on my personal experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dental Express.
